I really wanted these tires to last all season, but it looks like the cord is ready to say hi soon
The frustrating part is how great the rest of the tire is. The inside shoulders look brand new!
Seeing as I’d rather not get hurt or do damage to my car I’ve ordered a new set. I’m sure I could get through another autocross or two (or three)on these, but why risk it? I doubt they’ll last the rest of the year anyways.
I’m going to be a little more responsible to try and stretch the new set longer. I’ve been daily driving on these, not super smart for a 200 treadwear tire. I’ll also have the tires flipped when the outsides get worn down so I can use them for longer. At some point I may even consider crash bolts to max out the negative camber on the front.
Live and learn. Next season I think I’ll try some Potenzas, they have thicker outside shoulders. I considered getting them this time but it would have cost at $100 more.
“You should autocross” they said...”it’s cheap and fun” they said....my wallet hurts

I think that means you need more camber? Maybe? I don’t actually know.
Of course then you have absurd tire wear for normal driving.

ah, you were autocrossing them. I thought that was from daily driving and was gonna say, something ain't right.

Yes, I need more camber. And yes, that would make for interesting DD wear. Which is why I'm not really planning on messing with it.

Yeahhhhh if this came from daily driving my car would be so broken. It's autocross, tons of roll onto the sidewall.

Clearly the only reasonable response is to get a 911 Turbo S which has dynamic camber adjustment.

Another set of R-S3?
why not RE71R? Or Rival S?

You may want to do an alignment and rotation. Run the current insides on the outsides. They’re directional so this means dismounting them and remounting them for the correct orientation, but there is argument that there’s some meat left on those. I’d want a spare set just in case but with as much tread as is on the rest of the tire, it’s almost wasteful to trash them at this point. With the next set be more aggressive with rotations and alignments. When I worked at Firestone they offered (and still do, probably) “Lifetime” alignment, rotation, and balancing services, to the point where we had a group of Subaru bros who would come in weekly to have their cars aligned and tires rotated, at no additional cost (though they did bring us food and got us event tickets as thanks for being mild PITAs) because they bought the “Lifetime” services.
Potenzas are quite good. Coincidentally, several of the Subaru bros ran Potenzas, a mix of RE050s and RE960 Pole Positions (this was about 6 years ago, as they’ve moved on to newer tire lines), with another running the Firestone Firehawk, I think either the Wide Ovals or the GTs, and one guy trailered his in with non-DOT track tires of some sort.

Good thing you got new tires, otherwise you might get Silverstone 2013’d

Get yourself some RE71r’s

Because RS-3s are fantastic and the cheapest. I don’t think I can get rival s’s in my size.

I had rotated them (front to back), but since it’s the shoulder it would only do so much.
Remounting them would have been smart, and while I could probably do that and keep using these I'd rather not push it. I'm going to remount the new ones when there's more life left on the outside to extend the life of the set.

Maybe next year. The RS-3s are about $100 a set cheaper than everything else, and I've really liked the way they drive. Since I'll more than likely need new tires for next season no matter what I get I figured I'd save the cheese for now.

But if they RE71’s last a few more events, it’s worth the extra $100. I think they have a better sidewall construction that prevents too much rollover, and chewing up the edge.

I’d give adjustable sway bars a shot. Not to expensive.

get yourself some mud tires
problem solved

I had some Toyo R888 tires that I ran daily on my car, with a couple track days thrown in. I was in a very similar situation to you not too long ago. I still really want to get the tires remounted, but flipped, in order to use all the tread. I just haven’t found a cost effective way to do so. Time to find some hookups, ha!

I don't know if it changes for re-mounting, but Tires Plus by me charges like $12 per tire for mounting, so it's about $60 to mount 4.

True. I already ordered the RS3’s, but I'll give something else a try next time

Wouldn't do any good for me as it wouldn't give me a camber adjustment

It decreases the need for camber. Since your limited in how much you can adjust yours it’ll help.
![]() 07/13/2015 at 09:13 |

I don't think I follow. The car is still going to roll onto the sidewalls.

McPherson struts gain positive camber as the suspension is compressed. Sway bars can decrease traction so it’s a balancing act, but you’ll minimize this effect the flatter you keep the car.

That isn’t too bad. Most places around me want 80+
